For those of you who aren’t necessarily internet-search-savvy…
Being on tumblr, much like the rest of the internet [e.g. pinterest, weheartit, etc.], is a game of image roulette when it comes to true sources. Many things are unsourced, or even worse, wrongly sourced. Some re-posters even go far enough to claim an “unknown” source, as if it could never be found even if attempted. Of course it’s going to happen, an infinite amount of times, so how do you know if images used in aid of certain posts and articles are truly relevant to the topic being addressed?
Here’s the answer to all your sourcing problems. Check out Google Search by Image here. All you have to do is drag the image[s] in question, one by one, over the search bar - either from your desktop or directly from a web page - and let the magic happen. You will be presented with a list of sites said image appeared upon, and the search usually reveals the original post that first included the image.
It’s simple but beyond effective, and shockingly, is a useful tool very few seem to even know exists, much less understand how to use. I hope this helps all of you with any pieces of art, or “informative” images that you’re skeptical about.
Always remember to fact AND source check, especially with posts on tumblr. There are many out there who try and make informative posts when they themselves are lacking proper information and knowledge, thus spreading misinformation and leading many astray from the very real facts and events that are sometimes harder to find.
